K-pop singer-turned-actor Lee Joon will play a resentful villager bent on glory in an upcoming fantasy horror film “The Guest” (literal translation).

Lee plays Namsoo, the avaricious son of a despotic town ruler who harbors a grudge against his father. Namsoo’s father Chonjang, is played by actor Lee Sung-min.

“During filming, my schedules overlapped so it was very difficult, but Lee Sung-min looked after me like I was his real son and matched his schedule to fit my situation,” said Lee Joon at a press call in Seoul, Tuesday. “When I saw that, I decided I had to do and show my best.”

Lee Sung-min said, “Lee Joon is a (K-pop) idol singer, but he sometimes fell asleep on set with his mouth wide-open. When I saw how exhausted he was, I felt bad and could not but change my schedule for him.”

“The Guest” is set in a 1950s fictional village that is so tucked away it is not even depicted on the Korean map. One day, a musician named Wooryong (Ryu Seung-ryong) passes by with his son and tries to hide the villagers.

The film is based on the European folktale “The Pied Piper of Hamlet.” New director Kim Gwang-tae also wrote the screenplay.

“The Guest” will be released in Korea on July 9.
