Breakthrough stars of 2016

KBS World’s “e-Today” compiled a list of newcomer stars who have made a breakthrough in the movie industry this year.

First on the list was actress Kim Tae-ri, who plays the role of Sookhee in “The Handmaiden.” She was cast in the film after beating some 1,500 other candidates in an audition. Two film awards named her as best new actress this year.

Second on the list was child actress Shin Eun-soo, who was cast as the female lead in “Vanishing Time,” alongside actor Gang Dong-won. She is currently signed under JYP Entertainment and was picked from the 300 people who auditioned for “Vanishing Time.”

Third was actor Eom Tae-gu, who played the villain in “The Age of Shadows” alongside top stars like Song Kang-ho and Gong Yoo. He has been an actor for the past nine years, but he finally made a breakthrough with his role in “The Age of Shadows.”

The last on the list was actor David Lee, who played the role of Young-hun in the movie “Split.” This former child star has been acting since 2002 and is already in his 14th year as an actor.
