After singing about self-love in its previous work, SF9 has released an explosive new single titled “RPM,” a song that embodies the concept of hearts bursting with love.

The title of the new song, which fronts the band’s seventh EP, refers to the revolutions per minute of a machine. And SF9 explained that the boisterous pop-EDM track might be one of the group’s most dynamic and hard-hitting productions since its debut.

“If we have to define ‘RPM,’ we would say it as a ‘powerfully sexy’ song. If our previous track ‘Enough’ is like enjoying a nice meal at a decent restaurant while peacefully watching the sun set, ‘RPM’ is more powerful, as if embarking on a mission with a resolute determination while clad in battle uniforms,” said Inseong during a showcase event in Seoul on Monday.

“We are like nine runners racing for bursting love,” he added.

The video for the new song features sleek, fierce choreography and the band members perform in chic black outfits. Youngbin, Zuho, Taeyang and Hwiyoung, who are credited as lyricists for the track, said they had to find time to work on the album of the same title despite a hectic world tour schedule.

“We’d toured the US and Europe for about a month, and we had to squeeze in some time to make the song. Sometimes, we didn’t sleep on the plane and wrote lyrics and watched some videos to practice instead,” said Taeyang.

The nine-member boy band recently wrapped up its “2019 Unlimited Tour,” which brought the act to 10 cities in the US and Europe. And SF9 said the tour offered the group some valuable global experiences.

“I remember the time I had breakfast at a hotel in Paris during our stop in the city. One staff from the restaurant approached me and told me that her daughter was our fan,” Jaeyoon said.

Hwiyoung also proudly shared that he greatly appreciated Inseong’s fluent English skills, which came in handy during the tour.

“I served as a host during interviews. I’d studied English a bit before the tour by watching US sitcom series ‘Friends’ and English interviews by other K-pop acts. I think my English skills improved a lot,” Inseong said.

Zuho, who’d sat out on previous group promotions due to a back injury, expressed his excitement at being back onstage. He is credited as a lyricist for all six tracks on the album.

“I’ve been starving for performances and promotions. I wanted to greet fans as soon as possible,” he said.

“I know our preparation period for our new album isn’t that long, but our confidence is not groundless. We hope our new song will make the music charts and we can hold a big concert,” he added.

As the first dance-oriented boy group under FNC Entertainment -- which is also home to CNBLUE, FTIsland and AOA -- SF9 debuted in October 2016 with the album “Feeling Sensation.” While it’s not yet a household name in the industry, the group’s single “Now or Never” helped its previous album reach No. 10 on Billboard’s World Albums Chart in July last year -- a testament to the growing attention it is getting from US K-pop audiences.

The “RPM” EP also includes “Dreamer,” “Liar,” “See U Tomorrow” and “Echo.”

SF9 is set to perform July 6-7 at KCON 2019 New York.
