The idol group EXO shared two bits of good news: It was Chanyeol’s birthday, and the band was releasing its sixth full-length album, “Obsession.”

After the birthday boy blew out the candles on his cake with the help of Baekhyun, he happily agreed with Suho that it was a day of double joy.

“There are two versions of the album, EXO and X-EXO, and even we don’t know what photographs are inside,” said Suho, picking up a copy of the X-EXO version and muttering that the musicians’ request for a peek in advance was denied.

While Chanyeol helped himself to some cake, his bandmates began unboxing the album. Kai started to unwrap the EXO version first, but Baekhyun showed him how to do it better, mimicking the technique of professional YouTubers.

The CD comes with seven booklets of photographs, one devoted to the band as a group and one to each of its members.

“I am wearing a sleeveless (outfit) for these pictures taken at a seemingly abandoned site,” said Suho, flipping through the booklet for the viewers. The underwear in one of the photos was actually his but looked OK, he said, smiling.

The band opened the live entertainment program with “Blue Flame,” the lead track from its EP of the same name, demonstrating why it has been called “dreamy fatal.”

“It is a cool song that sings about pushing the boundaries of one’s passion and seeks love,” explained Jinjin. When special DJ Mina of Gugudan asked which member best embodied the track, all the members picked Rocky.

“He has this powerful choreography for the chorus part of the third verse. You will see the dance and understand,” said MJ.

The next track, “Go and Stop,” was catchy with an addictive melody. Jinjin came up with the rap part, said Sanha, suggesting that it would be better if the DJ listened to it through music sources. The rest of the band members burst into laughter at the youngest member’s tongue-in-cheek joke.

Jinjin and Rocky wrote part of the lyrics for “All About You,” coming up with their own rap and working on other parts together. Fans, both those gathered outside the studio and those tuning in online, asked Rocky to sing his favorite part live. He hesitated for a second before nodding and saying “OK, OK,” with a smile.

EXO’s Chen ready for final busking performance

Chen of EXO geared up for the last day of his busking tour.

EXO’s Chen went through the lyrics he’d written for a new song composed by Cho Jungchi, explaining that the first part was about teaming up with the guitarist and the chorus expressed his feelings about seeing fans outside Seoul for the first time in a long while. The song can also be about the flutters you get upon reuniting with a lover who has been away, commented Cho.

Chen thanked the singer-songwriter for the melody, while Cho praised the idol for coming up with beautiful words and predicted that he would be a great success as a lyricist.

The pair worked on the song a little before heading back to Seoul to join the last guest, vocalist Lim Hanbyul. During the practice, Lim noticed that Chen’s voice was not in perfect condition, probably from busking for four days.

When the trio appeared in front of the huge crowd gathered at Coex in southern Seoul, however, Chen seemed more than ready. The fact that the venue was the same place where he’d had a small concert to promote his debut solo album made him more comfortable, he said.

Kang Daniel sits down for mini interview

Kang Daniel answered a series of questions, sharing more details about his new song and about himself.

He began by introducing his just-released digital single, “Touchin’,” as an easy listening song with a strong melody. If you compared it to a movie, the genre would be film noir and it would likely feature Hong Kong actor Chow Yun Fat, said Kang, an acknowledged movie buff.

When asked to share his favorite way of staying warm during the chilly season, he said he liked listening to music while taking warm footbaths.

He then suggested songs for different occasions. The singer goes for “Nell” when he wants to clear his mind before going to bed. For listeners who are working late, he recommended “Touchin’” with a sheepish grin.

He has yet to demonstrate his rapping skills fully and says he is better at dancing as of now, but adds that fans will get more chances to see him rap in his future songs.
